Origin of Name
The name Poona derives from Punya Nagari (Sanskrit, "City of Virtue"). The oldest reference to this name is on a Rashtrakuta copper plate dated to 937 AD. Current Era in which the town is referred to as Punya-Vishaya or Punak Vishaya. By the 13th century, it had come to be known as Kasbe Pune or Punavadi. Although the city's name is sometimes transcribed as Poona in English, a practice particularly common during the British Raj, the spelling "Pune" has now become standard.
Pune is also known as The Oxford of the East, due to the various educational institutions, and also sometimes referred to as The Detroit of India owing to the many manufacturing companies, particularly automobile giants, having their base within the city's metropolitan area. Companies like General Motors, Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Tata motors etc have manufacturing centers in Pune.

"Naming Neighbourhoods"
Peth is the general name for a locality in old Pune. Businesses in many of these localities used to be open for business only once a week. Hence these localities are named according to the day they were open for business. For example,
Raviwar (Sunday) Peth, Somwar (Monday) Peth, Mangalwar (Tuesday) Peth, Budhwar Peth (Wednesday), Guruwar (Thursday) Peth, Shukrawar (Friday) Peth, and Shaniwar (Saturday) Peth. Some peths have been named after a major temple located within their boundaries. Kasba Peth is the oldest peth in Pune and is located bang in the city center. Ganesh Peth, Bhawani Peth and Ganj Peth are some other examples. Other peths have been named after certain notable people.
